    The micro–composition of the soil is closely related to its engineering properties. In Northeast China, seasonal freezing and thawing can induce deterioration of the physicomechanical characteristics of saline soil, which can ultimately lead to engineering failures and geological disasters. To investigate the micro composition evolution including the microstructure and grain size distribution of saline soil under the influence of freeze–thaw cycles, mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and laser particle size analysis (LPSA) were used to test undisturbed saline soil specimens undergoing different freeze–thaw cycles. The pore size distribution curves showed a double–peak shape and the grain size distribution curves showed a bidirectional change. Overall, the pores >0.4 μm increased while the pores smaller than 0.4 μm decreased with increasing freeze–thaw cycles. Moreover, the grain size distribution showed a different changing trend at a pore diameter of approximately 10 μm. During the whole freeze–thaw cycle process, the fragmentation of coarse particles (> 10 μm) and the aggregation of fine particles (< 10 μm) were evident, causing the transformation of different pore sizes, and the bidirectional change existed synchronously in the whole process. The freeze–thaw cycles for saline soil caused the lyotropic salt precipitation and dissolution and the ice volumetric expansion and ice segregation to change the grain size distribution leading to the evolution of pore distribution, ultimately changing the soil micro–composition and resulting in the change of macro engineering characteristics. The study is useful for understanding the change in the engineering properties of saline soil under freeze–thaw cycles from a microscale perspective.

    This study investigates the effect of spatial variability on the stability of a real 3D slope subjected to earthquakes by conventional Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) and a stochastic response surface method. The stochastic response surface method used in this study (VRSRSM) was combined with a variance reduction method due to spatial averaging of soil parameters in slope failure to reduce a large computational load due to the realization of spatially correlated input parameters in three-dimensional space. In order to verify the applicability of the stochastic response surface method with a variance reduction method for 3D slope reliability, the safety factor for a simple 3D slope under non-seismic and seismic conditions was analyzed by MCS and VRSRSM. The VRSRSM was applied to risk evaluation of deep-seated landslides caused by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake along with backcalculation of strength parameters based on the slope failure geometry and field investigation.

    This paper presents the physical properties of pumice fall deposit sampled at Takanodai, Minami-Aso village, Kumamoto Prefecture in JAPAN, where long runout landslide took place due to the main shock from the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. A series of direct box shear tests under various conditions such as constant-stress, constant-volume and cyclic-shear loading conditions was conducted for undisturbed and unsaturated samples of pumice fall deposit to evaluate shear strength properties and seismic behaviors. Based on the slope stability analysis followed by the soil runout analysis at Takanodai, the pumice fall deposit layer shows a large horizontal displacement. While pumice fall deposit layer has enough stability under a normal condition, the strength reduction induced by the soil particle crushing is considered to be one of the factors caused a long runout landslide at the above site.

    This paper presents a formula to estimate the stable weight of a rubble mound for breakwaters, considering the tsunami-induced overflow and seepage flow, based on the theoretical force balance among the frictional resistance of the rubble mound, the tractive force of the water flow over the caisson to the rubble mound and the seepage force of the rubble mound through the breakwaters. A series of hydraulic model tests was conducted on the scale of 1/100 for the Kamaishi Harbor Mouth Breakwaters in order to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed formula. Using the test results, the stability of rubble mounds for breakwaters was evaluated from the geotechnical engineering and hydrodynamical points of view.     Phytoremediation is recently paid attention as one of the low-cost and sustainable methods especially for remedying heavy metal contaminated ground. However, there are several cases that it may not be effective because plant growth is often dominated by geotechnical and climatic environments. To perform this method efficiently and effectively, it is necessary to evaluate the relationship between plant growth and geo-chemical and physical environments. Therefore, authors developed "geo-environment - plant root growth simulator" in order to estimate the future distribution of chemical substances in the ground. The explicit-finite-difference-method was applied on the simulator. The movement of soil moisture and water soluble substance can be modelled by Richard's equation and advection-dispersion-equation. As a targeted pollutant, hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) was chosen. This paper conducted a parametric study with changing three parameters such as the initial length of root (L), solute absorption speed of root (K-p), and root length density (L-v2) about the movement of chemical substances in unsaturated ground on a cylindrical coordinate system. As a result, in this numerical condition, the initial length of root had the largest effect for phytoremediation in the three parameters.

    Authors have been working on greening experiment of precious medicinal plant licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch.) by using developed GSMs (Greening Soil Materials) in non-habitat area of Southern Mongolia to combat for progression of desertification. GSM is made of sand and compost that can be taken around targeting ground. It can be controlled moisture and nutrient retention capacity in shallow part of ground for growing plants healthily by fixing the mixing ratio of the materials. It can be made and set easily and affordably. In this paper, for clarifying key geo-environmental factors of GSM to survive seeds of licorice, principal component analysis, and for making estimation formula of survival of licorice, multiple regression analysis were conducted. 13 kinds of parameters important for growth of plant such as volumes per one seed of licorice, water contention, CaCO3-Ca, pH, EC, various water soluble, and exchangeable cations of GSM were used by these analysis.

    Plant has a strong influence on shear strength properties of soil. Recently, slope protection method using plant is increased in public works, thus mechanism of preventing slope failure by root is expected to be clarified. In this study, in order to clarify relationships between plant and shear strength properties of soil, shear box tests of soil with plant were conducted. The strength properties of soil focusing on the number of plant were evaluated by measuring shear stress and strength parameters of soil with plant. Furthermore, vertical displacement, horizontal displacement and bioelectric potential of stem and root were measured during shear test. The relationship between bioelectric potential of plant and shearing behaviour of soil was considered. As a result of shear box tests, when plant was existed in the area of shear box, strength parameter c(d), phi(d) was increased respectively compared with the area without root. Furthermore, amplitude of bioelectric potential was changed after maximum shear stress was shown.

    As one of the recycling methods for soft clay slurry, a technique called the cement-mixing and mechanical dehydration (CMD) method has been developed in the field of geotechnical engineering. CMD is enable us to manufacture high strength cement-mixing blocks and dehydrate clay with high water content.     The purpose of this paper is to develop a new earth reinforcement technology called "The SDPR method" having both functions of a single earth reinforcement to increases the embankment strength and a drainage pipe to lower a ground water level in embankment at the same time. This paper summarizes the effectiveness of the SDPR method by means of unsaturated-saturated seepage analysis and slope stability analysis in terms of the drainage effect, reinforcement effect and unsaturation effect of SDPRs.

    In order to improve the stability of breakwater due to tsunami-induced overflow and seepage flow, it is effective that putting armor blocks on the harbor-side mound of breakwater. A hydraulic model experiment for the model of Kamaishi Bay breakwaters under tsunami condition was conducted to evaluate the extent of armor block damage focusing on the weight, the height ratio (the ratio of the armor block height to the armor block diameter) and the open ratio of the armor block (the ratio of the open volume to the armor block volume).

    Desertification is one of the most critical geo-environmental problems. The purpose of this research is to develop the sustainable and high added value anti-desertification method by utilizing medicinal plant licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis). It is one of the most valuable medicinal plants which grow naturally in arid region, such as Mongolia and China, but the distribution area is decreasing recently. Therefore, planting licorice in Mongolian arid region by simple and inexpensive method could be "sustainable and high added value greening", which can satisfy geo-environmental improvement, expansion of distribution area of licorice, and conservation of natural ecological resource at the same time. In order to achieve these purpose, we developed Greening Soil Material (GSM), which is pipe-shaped and has several times higher water and nutrient retention capacity for planting licorice in deteriorated area. In this paper, cultural experiments were conducted in sandy ground simulated arid region and Non-habitat of licorice in Mongolia by using GSM in order to grasp suitable soil water and calcium condition, setting direction and outer layer processing were examined for survival and growth of licorice. It could be revealed that 1) medicinal ingredient in the root tended to become higher by using GSM whose available moisture has 3 to 10 times higher than the Mongolian soils, 2) root length and weight became bigger by using GSM which contains around 18% of CaCO3, 3) survival rate of the conditions setting GSM horizontally was higher than the conditions setting GSM vertically, 4) survival rate of the conditions which GSM contained 10% of compost or potting soil as the dry weight ratio was higher than other conditions, and 5) the more Ca2+ had been kept in the GSM, the higher survival rate was.

    &nbsp;In order to recycle dredged soil, our research group developed interlocking blocks from dredged soil. Dredged soil interlocking blocks (350 mm in width, 350 mm in depth and 100 mm-150 mm in height) were made from soft clay dredged at the Kanmon Waterway. They were produced with the constant pressure 5 MPa and cement content of 15 %, 20 % and 25 % per the dry weight of clay. On the other hand, Katagiri3) developed dredged and dewatered soil. The unconfined compression test was carried out to investigate material characteristics of dredged soil interlocking blocks and dredged and dewatered soil. The following conclusions are obtained: (1) There was relationship between unconfined compressive strength and dry density about dredged soil interlocking block, but there wasn't much relationship about dredged and dewatered soil. (2) There was relationship between unconfined compressive strength and water content about dredged soil interlocking block, but there was no relationship about dredged and dewatered soil. (3) Inclination of relationship between unconfined compressive strength and water-cement ratio was almost the same about dredged soil interlocking block cement content of 20 % and dredged and dewatered soil cement content of 15 % and 20 %.

    &nbsp;The Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake and tsunami gave serious damages to many breakwaters in Tohoku region, Japan. The major cause of failure is the tsunami wave force. However, a new type of failure is confirmed: caused by scouring of the harbor side mound by overflow and seepage flow. In fact, the cause of failure of 9 among the 22 destroyed breakwaters was scouring of the mound and any effective measurement against that cause has not been invented. Therefore, in the previous research we developed a new method to calculate the stable weight of an armor block in consideration of the overflow and seepage flow from the view point of the geotechnical engineering. In this paper, using this method, the most effective shape of the armor block will be described. Furthermore, some sort of hydraulic model experiments with Kamaishi bay breakwater as a subject have been done in order to see the difference of damage in terms of different 3 height ratio (given by height divided by radius of blocks) shapes of blocks and 2 ways of laying blocks. Thorough this methodology the optimum proportion of the block which has a hole like annulus was found. The hydraulic model experiments also revealed that the most effective height ratio was 1/2 out of 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4. In conclusion, it can be reasonable to use this methodology to determine the optimum shape of armor blocks only under the situation of overflow, however when it comes to the time of only seepage flow, more investigation must be done.

    平成23年東北地方太平洋沖地震による津波により,東北地方各地の防波堤が被災し甚大な被害が生じた.津波による防波堤の被災要因は大きく分けて3つあり,越流による捨石マウンドの洗掘,防波堤の背面と前面の水位差と津波波力によるケーソンへの水平力,捨石マウンド内に発生する浸透流による支持力低下が挙げられる.これらを複合的に考慮した防波堤の安定性評価は研究が進んでいない.本文では,防波堤の越流ならびに捨石マウンド内に発生する浸透流に着目し,理論的な捨石の安定重量算出式を提案する.この式は,越流・浸透流を考慮することにより,より精度の高い結果を求めることができ,実際の防波堤の設計や改良の際に用いることができると考えられる.また,その妥当性を釜石港湾港防波堤を対象とする水理模型実験により検証した.

    In order to recycle dredged soil, our research group developed interlocking blocks from dredged soil. Dredged soil interlocking blocks (350 mm in width, 350 mm in depth and 100 mm-150 mm in height) were made from soft clay dredged at the Kanmon run. They were produced with the constant dehydration pressure 5 MPa and cement content of 15%, 20% and 25% per the dry weight of clay. The unconfined compression test and bending test were carried out to investigate material characteristics of dredged soil interlocking blocks in the water for six months. On the other hand, in order to check the effect of interlocking blocks, a road was constructed by using interlocking blocks on the surface and, as a roadbed material, dredged and dehydrated soil and crushed stone for mechanical stabilization were used. Characteristics of dispersion of traffic load and settlement were evaluated by running experiments. Stress was measured by four earth pressure gauges and settlement was measured by surveying. The following conclusions are obtained: (1) There was close relationship between unconfined compressive strength and water-cement ratio. Therefore, it is concluded that unconfined compressive strength of dredged soil blocks are controlled by water-cement ratio. (2) Dredged and dehydrated soil can disperse traffic load effectively. (3) Soil-concrete blocks can't disperse traffic load effectively, but have sinking suppressing effect when using dredged and dehydrated soil as roadbed material.

    Desertification is a kind of land degradation phenomena which can be caused by natural or artificial geo-environmental problems. Especially, Asia is considered to be highly vulnerable to desertification than other area. Authors have been trying to develop the measures of anti-desertification which is sustainable and with highly added value. In order to accomplish this purpose, licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch.), a kind of medical herb grows natively in Chinese and Mongolian arid region, was experimentally planted in Mongolian arid area. It is one of the most demanded medicinal herbs in Japanese pharmaceutical industry, but numbers of native licorice in these regions are decreasing due to several causes. Authors developed Greening Soil Material (GSM) as one of the effective methods to plant licorice where once was habitat of licorice. It is pipe-shaped with more than 10 times higher water and nutrient holding capacity compared to the deserted ground. The experimental research using GSM has been conducted in Southern Mongolia. From the results of past experimental study, important factors for survive and healthy growth of licorice in arid area were revealed: volume, water content, and calcium content in GSMs. In order to suggest the suitable conditions for survive of licorice in its non-habitat area, this paper presents the relationship between survival ratio of licorice and volume of GSMs, water content of GSMs, and calcium content of GSMs and quantifies these relationships.

    When The Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake occurred on the March 11th, 2011, harbor facilities such as breakwaters and tide embankments suffered serious damages from the Tsunami. The following three mechanisms are considered to be related to the collapse of the breakwater: 1) scouring of the mound due to overflow, 2) the horizontal force originated from the difference of water level between the sea side and the harbor side on the breakwater, and 3) reduction of bearing power of the mound induced by seepage flow. However, the mechanism of the instability of the rubble-mound by overflow and seepage flow induced by tsunami is not fully clarified. In this study, the formula to calculate the stable weight of rubble-mound was proposed in consideration of the overflow and seepage flow, and hydraulic model experiments were conducted on Kamaishi Bay breakwaters as the subject in order to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed formula. Using the results, the stability of the breakwater was evaluated from the geotechnical engineering point of view.

    Development of technique which can restrain the progress of desertification sustainably and voluntary is taken place by using valuable herbal plant licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis). Firstly, prehension about geo-environment included weather condition around the study areas is needed to succeed the technique. This paper indicates the results of geo-environmental survey were held in the arid area where licorice lives natively and doesn't live. And this paper also shows the consideration about difference between habitat and non-habitat of licorice, and relationships between physical properties and chemical properties in the ground. The experimental results are concluded that 1) The arid ground in Bogd soum and Baatsagaan soum in Bayanhongor province, Mongolia, the ground was heterogeneous whose grain size properties are between sand and silt within the depth of 1 ~ 2 m. 2) Water content in the ground which licorice could be lived was at least more than 5 %, and keeping groundwater level and ground moisture could be important for bringing up seedlings of licorice. 3) The silty layers has relatively higher available moisture than the sandy layers, and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) accumulated in the silty layers, so that they had higher pH and EC values than sandy layer.

    In order to develop a self-healing ground improvement technology, the recovery characteristics of the shear strength for cement-treated clay was clarified by means of a series of box shear tests and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. The main conclusions are as follows: 1) The shear strength recovery depends on the soil type of base material, GGBS content and the vertical pressure for box shear test. 2) The shear strength recovery of self-healing cement-treated clay is considered to be due to the increase of Ettringite and Calcium Aluminate Hydrate by the hydration of Unhydrate cement on the shear surface. 3) The bearing capacity increases 1.59 times with proposed ground improvement methodology.

    A study was conducted to develop a "surface failure bio-alarm" for early detection of landslides by monitoring the bio-potential of vegetation on slopes where landslides may occur due to heavy rainfall or earthquakes.The results of box shear tests and shaking tests for model slope with vegetation were conducted to quantify the relationship between soil strength and shear-stimulated bio-electric potential fluctuations during soil shear (= landslide). From these studies and analysis, a method to estimate the shear strength of the ground from the variation of the bio-electric potential was developed.

    In order to propose an effective and efficient way of purifying contaminated ground, “eco-friendly simulator on phytoremediation” was developed. It can analyze effect of purification with time. Two-dimensional analytical field was assembled, and to inspect accuracy of the developed simulator, some cultural experiments were conducted with several concentrations of hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) on “Two-dimensional nursery apparatus”. Turnip leaf and sunflower were tried for the cultural experiment.Following outcomes were obtained from this study.
    1) The most effective growth parameter of plants for phytoremediation was elongation speed of root. 2) An accurate simulator could be developed which corresponds to experimental results for 1 month.

    Extreme motions are often observed during strong earthquakes. They can be classified as the extreme large acceleration, the extreme large velocity and the extreme large displacement. Why and how these extreme motions occurred are still incomprehensible problems. It is important and necessary to clarify the mechanisms of these extreme motions induced by earthquakes for disaster mitigation in earthquake engineering as well as seismology. In this study, we have clarified the mechanism of each extreme motion phenomenon. A sudden braking model has been proposed for the mechanism of the extreme large acceleration. A ping pong model has been proposed for the mechanism of extreme large velocity. A Multiplex Acceleration Model has been proposed for extreme large displacement. The above mentioned extreme motions can be explained by using these models and they have been successfully simulated by using DDA simulations.

    Mechanical properties and the applicability for road pavement and coastal protection of soil block produced by cement-mixing and mechanical dehydration are evaluated. In addition, this study proposes a formula to calculate the stable weight of soil block underneath breakwater foundation in consideration of the overflow and seepage flow induced by tsunami based on the theoretical force balance between frictional resistance of soil block, the tractive force of the water flow over the caisson to the soil block and seepage force thorough underneath breakwater foundation. A series of hydraulic model experiments were conducted on the scale of 1/100 for Kamaishi Bay breakwaters as the subject in order to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed formula. Using the test results, the stability of the soil block underneath breakwater foundation was evaluated from the geotechnical engineering point of view as well as the hydrodynamical point of view.

    In this study, the erosion characteristics of sandy and clayey soils due to linkage of wind and water forces are investigated by experimental and analytical approaches in order to give a basic idea not only for combating progress of desertification in arid area, but also for solving the sediment runoff problem in Okinawa area due to heavy rainfall.
    At first, the relationship between wind speed and soil loss were evaluated paying attention to the initial density and water contents of sandy soils. The surface shear resistance of sandy soil increases with just increasing the water contents from almost zero initial water contents. Secondly, the limit wind speed increases about 40% comparing with the case in dry condition when the water contents of surface soil slightly increase. Furthermore, a simple model for estimating the soil loss as mainly due to rainfall is presented. The proposed model gives a good agreement with the small size model test results under various rainfall strengths.

    Development of technique which can restrain the progress of desertification sustainably and voluntary was taken place by using valuable herbal plant licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis). Firstly, proper prehension about geo-environment included weather condition around the semi-desert areas in Mongolia is needed. Based on the field investigation, the real environmental situations of desertification area are found out. The natural conditions that suitable for the growth of licorice are also understood. Then, following the findings in the field, the self-watering system has been proposed as one of the effective tools for controlling the water contests of soils in semi-arid ground, which is easy to use sustainably and environmental friendly.
    This greening system works under the condition of no extra energy input. The system can absorb and store some quantity of water. The simplified system propsosed was verified by the field vegitation tests to minimize the quantity of evaporation.
