This article surveys the history of English studies and education in Japan, paying special attention to the role of literary texts and stylistics. Firstly, the role of literature and stylistics in Japan is discussed from a pedagogical point of view, including both English as a foreign language and Japanese as a native language. Secondly, the way in which stylistics has contributed to literary criticism in the country is examined, with reference to the history of literary stylistics since 1980. Finally, this article considers further applications of stylistics to language study in Japan, offering two examples: analysis of thought presentation in Yukio Mishima's Megami (2006[1955]), and the teaching of an English poem and a Japanese haiku to Japanese EFL students. The overall aim of this article is to demonstrate that literature as language teaching material and stylistics as a critical and teaching method are significant not only in understanding English, but also in appreciating our own native language if it is not English.

This study aimed to identify suitable circumstances of learning foreign language especially for Japanese people, using oral history methods. The study focused upon Japanese global talents who are widely working around the Asian countries and using their advanced foreign language skills, particularly English. They were interviewed and their English learning experiences and application to practical situations were closely investigated.
The results of the narrative analysis obtained from the interviews were actively disseminated to the society through a website, book publication, and symposia, together with educators and researchers in and outside Japan, to propose learning content and effective English learning methods necessary for Japanese people to live in a diverse global society.

Our achievements in this research project can be summarized as follows. Firstly, observations of actual teaching practice, not only in Japan but also in other countries such as Finland and UK, have contributed to a reevaluation of literary texts in language learning and teaching. Secondly, interviews with successful learners have helped clarify the role of literature in foreign language acquisition, as well as other pedagogical effects such as improving cross-cultural understanding. Thirdly, we published a textbook of literary texts and teaching practices which we hope will encourage those teachers unfamiliar with literary texts to use them in their classrooms. Finally, we have published several articles (one of them is for Language and Literature, the prestigious International Journal) and made presentations at international conferences and through them we have established various international connections to enable us to carry out further research in related areas.
